현재 대부분 캐나다의 공립학교에서 국제 학생들을 받아 들이고 있는데, 공립학교는 그 지역의 해당 교육구청에서 관리한다. 공립학교는 남녀 공학이고 기숙사는 없으며 주간 프로그램만을 제공한다. 일부 종교학교를 제외하고는 대부분의학교가 비종교적 교육을 실시하고 있으며, 이는 각 주별로 다양하다. 해외 유학생을 적극적 유치 목적으로 어학프로그램(ESL) 과정과 홈스테이(Homestay)를 제공한다. 일단 학교에 입학하게 되면 수학이나 영어 등의 실력검증시험을 통해 학생의 능력에 맞는 수업들을 학업지도교사가 지정해 주므로, 일반적으로 첫 학기에는 영어 능력이 많이 요구되지 않는 과목(체육, 음악 등)과 영어수업을 병행하게 된다.

사립학교는 모든 주마다 있으며 자녀의 해외유학을 위한 또 다른 선택이 될 수 있다. 모든 사립학교는 각 주의 교육부에 등록되어야 하며 반드시 교육과정과 그 밖의 사항들이 각 교육부에서 요구하는 학과 과정이나 그 밖의 기준을 준수해야 한다. 남학교, 여학교, 남녀공학 중에서 선택할 수 있으며 기숙사 시설을 제공하는 학교도 있다. 일부 사립학교는 특정 종교를 따르거나 독특한 윤리교육을 강조하기도 하며 엄격한 학습 수준을 적용하기도 한다.
